Fair-Use Guidelines

The term ‘Fair-Use Guidelines’ refers to the policies Hendrickson Publishers uses to determine whether or not you need written permission from Hendrickson Publishers to produce or publish your work using our copyrighted material. To determine fair use, please carefully review the information below, and if your request falls within our Fair-Use Guidelines, written permission is not necessary, and you may proceed with your project, provided you use a proper copyright notice as indicated below. If you feel your request is not in compliance, or you have additional questions, please fill out this Permissions Questionnaire.

The following Fair Use Guidelines only pertain to written text and do not include permissions for any use of photographs, illustrations, paintings, maps, graphs, or other artistic/illustrated works within our books. If you are requesting permission for any artistic/illustrated works, you must fill out this Permissions Questionnaire.

BOOKS
  1. NON-COMMERCIAL (NON-SALABLE) USE
    Permission is granted to quote up to 500 words or 2 pages from any single title provided it does not comprise 10% or more of your completed work.
  2. CLASSROOM, SMALL GROUP, EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES WITH FEWER THAN 50 PARTICIPANTS
    Permission is granted to copy excerpts of up to 5 pages provided portions are not sold to participants.
  3. COMMERCIAL (SALEABLE) USE
    Permission is granted to quote up to 250 words for commercial purposes so long as it is not used for a stand-alone product, not quoting an entire chapter of the book, nor comprises 5% or more of your completed work.
  4. ART/ILLUSTRATION USE
    Requests to quote books for artistic usage are considered on a case-by-case basis. If you are requesting permission to quote a book for any artistic/illustrated works, such as photographs, paintings, cards, drawings, maps, graphs, etc., you must fill out this Permissions Questionnaire.
  5. COPYRIGHT NOTATION

    If your request falls within these guidelines, you do not need written permission from Tyndale and there are no fees, but you must apply the proper copyright notice, which you can find below.

    If you are seeking permission for a ROSE PUBLISHING TITLE, you must send in your request by filling out this Permissions Questionnaire.

If your request falls outside these guidelines you will need written permission from Tyndale. Fees may apply in some cases that are not within fair-use limits and are determined based on the amount of material used, the distribution of that material, and whether it is for commercial or non-commercial use. All fees are established to protect our copyrighted material.

HOLY BIBLE NLT

The New Living Translation (NLT) is a modern Bible translation of the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Old and New Testaments, which 90 scholars worked on to translate them into natural, everyday English. For more on the NLT, visit www.newlivingtranslation.com.

  1. FAIR USE

    The text of the Holy Bible, New Living Translation (NLT), may be quoted in any print or eBook form, up to and inclusive of 500 verses without express written permission of the publisher, provided that the verses quoted do not account for more than 25 percent of the work in which they are quoted, and provided that a complete book of the Bible is not quoted.

    Quotations in excess of five hundred (500) verses or twenty-five percent (25%) of the work, or other permission requests, must be approved in writing by Tyndale House Publishers. Send requests by email to permission@tyndale.com or through the Permissions Questionnaire.

  2. COPYRIGHT NOTATION

    When the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, is quoted, one of the following credit lines must appear on the copyright page or title page of the work:

  3. NON-SALABLE MEDIA
    When quotations from the NLT text are used in non-salable media, such as church bulletins, orders of service, newsletters, screen projections, or similar media, a complete copyright notice is not required, but the initials (NLT) must appear at the end of each quotation.
  4. COMMENTARY/BIBLE REFERENCE
    Publication of any commentary or other Bible reference work produced for commercial sale that uses the NLT requires written permission for use of the NLT text. Request permission by filling out our Permissions Questionnaire
  5. MUSIC

    Our policy for quoting the Bible in music is that the verses must be quoted word-for-word (verbatim), with no words taken out.
    Quotes from the NLT in music must be clearly detailed in writing on our Permissions Questionnaire before permission may be granted.
    Please include the following information in your request:

    1. Your complete lyrics
    2. How many verses of NLT scripture are you using?
    3. Approximately what percentage of your song is made up of NLT scripture?
    4. How many songs are you hoping to write?
    5. Do you intend on selling your song and on what platforms and in what formats?
  6. ARTWORK

    Quotes from the NLT used with graphic designs including T-shirts, book covers, posters, bumper stickers, banners, greeting cards, billboards, or other artwork must be clearly detailed in writing on our Permissions Questionnaire before permission may be granted. In the questionnaire, please provide a list of which specific product types you want to sell, as well as pricing for each product.
    Please include the following information in your request:

    1. How many verses of NLT scripture are you using?
    2. What product types are you planning to sell?
    3. What will the retail price for each product be?
    4. How many units of each product are you hoping to sell in the next 5 years?
    5. What percentage of the product is made up of the NLT scripture?
    6. What does the product look like/is there other art included with the text?
  7. ONLINE PLATFORMS
    Our standard fair-use policy to quote the NLT in Sermons/Bible Teachings Online is:
    1. Permission to quote up to 50 verses per recording
    2. The scripture quotes can make up to 25% of the spoken content
    3. Recording cannot be commercial or monetized (if content is commercial or monetized, please fill out the Permissions Questionnaire to discuss in more detail)
    4. Each video must also give proper written attribution to the NLT in the description section of each post as follows:

    Our standard fair-use policy to quote the NLT in online formats (Podcasts, YouTube, Social Media, etc.) when percentage of bible content is over 25%:
    1. Permission to quote up to 250 verses per recording
    2. No more than 30 videos/episodes/posts containing NLT may be up on page at a time
    3. No post can contain an entire book of the Bible
    4. Recording cannot be commercial or monetized (if content is commercial or monetized, please fill out the Permissions Questionnaire to discuss in more detail)
    5. Each video must also give proper written attribution to the NLT in the description section of each post as follows:

    Not meeting online fair use guidelines:
    If the online content is substantially or exclusively NLT Bible content and is commercial/monetized, the creator may be required to pay a fee and to obtain a Permission Letter or a License from Tyndale House Publishers. If product falls into this category, please fill out the Permissions Questionnaire
  8. FURTHER GUIDELINES

    All material quoted from the NLT must be done so accurately, including punctuation, capitalization, italics, etc. Tyndale must be made aware of any intended deviation in style, in writing, prior to publication.

    Permission given by Tyndale House Publishers for the use of text from the NLT applies to the specific use requested. Any other use requires a separate request for permission. If you have been granted permission for use of text from the NLT, you may not pass permission on to another person.

KING JAMES VERSION
The text of the King James Version of the Bible is in the public domain. This means it can be quoted without permission from the publishers. However, the copyright to any notes, commentary, typesetting, and other extra-biblical material would be held by the current publisher. Please contact us if permission is being requested for these items.
